New to SuperCard?

What is SuperCard?
SuperCard is a very difficult program to classify. It is actually a combination of a multimedia, authoring, programing, and a database program. SuperCard uses a "card-window-project" metaphor which is very similar to HyperCard's "card-stack" metaphor.

Visit SuperCard.us for more information about SuperCard.

Converting From HyperCard?
Although once similar products, SuperCard and HyperCard have many differences. SuperCard is a modern and much more powerful tool than HyperCard. SuperCard can do essentially anything that HyperCard can do and more.

Both SuperTalk and HyperTalk are similar. Allegiant, a former developer of SuperCard, said that if you knew HyperTalk, then you already knew 90% of SuperTalk.

The SuperCard development environments, SuperEdit and the Runtime Editor, are as easy to use with a little practice. Some things, such as the creation of custom menus, are much easier to make in SuperCard.

It is possible to import existing HyperCard stacks for use in SuperCard.

Solutions Etcetera offers an overview for HyperCard Users who may be interested in SuperCard.

Brief History of SuperCard
Back in the late 80's, many people were unsatisfied by HyperCard. Some people/companies tried to fix HyperCard's shortcomings by writing externals to add requested features to the program (such as color). However, a company known as Silicon Beach Software decided that the best way to fix HyperCard's problems was to develop their own program. This program would give users color support and other features. This tool became know as SuperCard.

Eventually, Aldus bought Silicon Beach Software. SuperCard was then a product of Aldus until it was sold to Allegiant Technologies, a company which was started by former SuperCard engineers, before Aldus were acquired by Adobe.

Allegiant continued to update SuperCard for a few years, including the release of SuperCard 3.0.

IncWell eventually acquired SuperCard. They upgraded SuperCard to 3.5 and later to 3.6. They held on to the program for a years until it was purchased by Solutions Etcetera, the current developer of SuperCard.

Solutions Etcetera's first task was to release SuperCard 4.0, the first version that provided native support for Mac OS X. The next major release, SuperCard 4.5, is the current version and offers a number of new features and abilities.

Chilton Webb releases FindFileByName external
FindFileByName is a fork external which, not surprisingly, searches for a file by its name. According to Mr. Webb:

Ever notice that Spotlight sometimes *misses* a file or two, when you search by name? If I search on a removable drive, I get zero hits for any file name I come up with. Zero hits for everything, for that matter.

This external does one simple thing. It searches for files in a folder (recursively) that have the string you're hunting for in the file name.

HairyHighlandCow releases QuickTools 1.2
HairyHighlandCow has updated QuickTools to version 1.2:

QuickTools is a floating palette that gives access to many functions in SuperCard whilst taking up a small amount of screen area. At its heart is the PowerField into which you can type abbreviations of object properties which are applied to selected objects on hitting return.

QuickTools 1.2 offers some speed improvements and uses an SQLite database to show you the property or command it has interpreted from your abbreviation as you type. It also features guides which can be created in your projects and to which objects can align. The online documentation has also been improved.

QuickTools needs to have its database file and resources folder in the same location as itself on the hard disk in order to work. It is best to keep all the QuickTools items in the same folder.

Stéphane Leys fixes installer issue with ModuloPI 1.4
Due to issues with the
ModuloPI 1.4 installer, the alternative runtime editor has been updated to version 1.4.2 to correct these problems. (Source: SuperCard List) [form] [9/2]

Stéphane Leys updates ModuloPI to version 1.4
ModuloPI has been updated to version 1.4. A number of new features have been added. According to Mr. Leys:

What's new :

- A new Globals module done by John. It shows and allows editing global variables, very easy to use.

- Dividers.

This new feature of the anchordata module allows implementing with a few clicks dividers similar to what can be found in Mail, iTunes or System Info and many other applications.

There is a simple recipe in the MPI help project (click the "?" button in the anchordata module). The help includes a divider implemented this way so you can immediately see what it does, it also includes a QT movie illustrating the recipe. It is possible to implement several dividers, horizontal and vertical and combinations of the two.

MPI is required for editing the dividers but not for running them. This new feature includes a "plug-in" which will manage the dividers when MPI is absent (in a standalone for instance). Implementing these dividers doesn't require any scripting.

- The installer

Since I've got some bug reports about the installer with Tiger, the MPI files are not any more embedded into a bundle installer. This new version of the installer is a simple SC project, it will copy the configuration of the version of MPI installed on your disk into the new one : which modules are open, the location of the windows ... etc. If you don't already have MPI or copy the files by hand, you will inherit of my config (i.e. many modules all over the screen).

If there is any problem in the installation process, the MPI files may be copied by hand into the SC pouch as before. But all the reports I had recently are saying that the installer is working without problem. However, I would be glad to get some feedback if the installer reports errors.

- The Object Linker

I've also done some work on this module but its development is still in progress. I've included an updated version of the Zeno project for people who would wish to play a bit with the Object Linker (the Zeno project is not handled by the installer)

- The PI

The behavior or the PI has been slightly changed for more consistency with the context : the "background" item of the "Edit" popup menu has been removed. For editing the properties of the background, just edit the background (cmd-B or the button in the MPI module).

A new cmd-R shortcut has been added for coming back to the properties of the card when the "Edit" popup menu has been used for switching to another level of context (editing the properties of window, the project or the global properties)

In addition, many bugs have been fixed in this version. (Source: SuperCard List) [form] [9/2]

HairyHighlandCow releases Address Book Items beta external
Address Book Items, created by
HairyHighlandCow, lets you search your Address Book information. According to the developer:

Address Book Items is a bundle external which can search your Mac OS X Address Book. Name (with title), birthday, email addresses, addresses and phone/fax numbers are returned, with labels. There are various search and filtering options. The external can also list records of a specified type, or list all records from the Address Book. The project explains how to extract the different elements you need from the data returned.

*** Important! ***

The external is in beta. There is an issue with postal addresses that contain accented characters. If your address book contains these, the external will crash SuperCard when it tries to return them. I am working on a fix.

New features planned for ListMaster upgrade
Chilton Webb has revealed his future plans regarding List Master. According to Mr. Webb:

ListMaster has certainly changed over the years. I'm about to release a new version of it that adds all manner of cool new features. However, this version (and future versions based on it) are now different enough from the original that Mark wrote, to possibly warrant a new name.

The version on my Dot Mac site is the latest version based on Mark's open source code. As such, as soon as I've cleaned up the code, I'll post that online as well, and let Richard know. Since that release, less than 10% of the open source code is now in use, in the external, and it's very likely none of it will be used in the actual release version. All bugs, from this point forward, are mine.

The API for interfacing with Arrays should work the same, for backward compatibility. However, the desire to link XML data into LM is a really great idea. For that matter, being able to link LM into any xml source would be a pretty slick trick. So I'll make sure that feature gets added to this version prior to its release. Tomas, I'll discuss exactly what this would mean off-list, and later I'll publish a public API for interfacing with it from our discussions.

There are a lot of things that LM could bring to the table now, such as data browser support (or at least emulation), as well as a bunch of more recent additions, like the sidebar area in Panther and beyond.

Please send me any suggestions you have for future versions of the product, as well as any suggestions for the new name.

John Johnston releases "Welcome to the SuperCard List" proposal
John Johnston has released a "Welcome to the SuperCard List" proposal, a concept brought up on the SuperCard List recently. According to Mr. Johnston:

A couple of chats ago we were discussing ways to spread the SC word. One idea was a 'Welcome Pack' for newcomers to the SC list.

I've been working on this a little, and we discussed it a bit more on the last chat.

The idea is to have a project that new list members could be pointed to when they join. The project would contain List information, SC related web links, Info about the chat, SC news and some 'goodies'. The project's contents can be updated via the web. The goodies would be small projects donated by the list and could either come with the project or be downloaded by it, hopefully these would be small utilities or demos that are not available elsewhere. Not full-blown help projects, but projects that would intrigue, inspire and encourage dissection, commented scripts rather than explanations....(IMO)

I've uploaded some screenshots of the project with details of what is there and what is needed to: <http://www.littlefishsw.co.uk/scwelcome/index.html>

A couple of goodies have already been 'donated' (thanks to Vince). More are needed. Also need is some text, a general welcome message, and anything else anyone can thing of. Links and links to any SC related RSS feeds.
